PMT’s Top 5 Resolutions for 2015: Spurring Company-wide Innovations

As we roll into the New Year, PMT is drawing into focus its resolutions—not the flimsy kind that gradually lose momentum as the year progresses, but rather resolutions that map our commitments to continued success and productivity in the year ahead.

What’s important to PMT this year? Here’s our top 5 for 2015:

Safety & Wellness The top priority every year is the safety of our employees. Though the plastics industry’s safety ranking is higher than other manufacturing segments, we continue to take our commitment seriously to keep our staff safe and healthy on the plant floor. Safety trainings on special topics, operator trainings, OSHA classes and Paulson Trainings all contributed to our excellent safety records in 2013 and 2014, and we’re working toward a goal of zero lost work days in 2015.

A strong emphasis on employee wellness will make a triumphant return to PMT this year. CEO Chuck Sholtis is setting the tone—he’s always on the move, even in his office where he gets work done while walking on his treadmill desk. We are outlining a new wellness program, with an end goal of encouraging PMT employees to feel their best and continue an excellent record of high productivity.

Innovation The encompassing theme of 2015 is innovation at PMT. We just finished creating a new space in our factory devoted entirely to innovation. Bright with energy-efficient LED lighting, this space will serve both our customers and employees as a dedicated place for presentations, demonstrations and trainings. Our 3-D printer, Baxter robot and other new technical capabilities will live in this room, along with usa_slide_wmodour Paulson Training centers and a manufacturing display area. This center will launch soon—stay tuned!

Made in the U.S.A. We are always committed to being Made in the U.S.A. As a veteran-owned business, we are proud to have found success for over 40 years with all of our employees making all of our products right here in the U.S.A. As recent news points to a less-than-exciting forecast for American reshoring, our strategic vantage point on the U.S./Mexico border allows us to see reshoring steadily increasing in North America. We continue to gain new customers moving their assembly operations from China to Mexico. In fact, in an interesting twist, PMT actually exports some of our products overseas to China. From our view, North American reshoring will continue this year.

Sustainability We’ve focused in on sustainability for several years, making “green” manufacturing our philosophy. Energy efficiency is our goal, and we’ve executed plant improvements that save over 1.9 million kWh of energy a year. Today, fifty percent of our machines are clean, efficient electric presses, and we have proprietary technology interfacing with the IQMS ERP system to keep the factory running in lean-and-green mode.

This year, we will continue to evaluate new sustainability opportunities. Several improvements are planned, from adding occupancy sensors, to installing new LED lighting in PMT’s offices, to continuing to invest in electric presses.

Education and Workforce Development A common problem faced across the U.S. manufacturing sector is the growing lack of qualified job candidates to fill key positions. PMT is working to alleviate this stress on the plastics industry while increasing opportunity in our local job market by re-igniting our apprenticeship program. Look for more details on this new spin on an old program as the year progresses.
